Expressing different moods from a single object can be achieved in multiple ways such as the angle at which the object is photographed, a setting or change of background can also set a mood, and arrangement of said object.

His concepts helps people to get and recieve information the best way possible. One of the general ideas is “more is better”, giving people the most information possible. Giving outlines, garphs, etc are ways for helping someone understand. Second, the design should be simple but the information must have complexity. And third, stay consistent with information being shown which increases accuracy in getting the desired perception of the data
a waking life
I think the animators take certain aspects of the background and move them around to make the viewer pay attention to things that we normally dont in other movies as well as life. The animation used in the film probaly gave the animators a freedom to do and include any thing they wanted in frame, for example the man’s boatcar may have been just a car in the original filming and later replaced with a boat.
